These numbers have names
They always have
Since time immemorial
In English, Shona or Swahili
They were named
These numbers have names
They always have
They maybe statistics, graphs and percentages
With commas i.e decimal points
But they have names
These numbers have names
They always have
Their names aren’t Tom, Dick and Harry
But Sipho from cubicle 2, Jane the quiet one from church
And the guy with the musika at the corner
These numbers have names
They always have
They aren’t just statistics
They never have been
They had faces that laughed and hearts that beat
These numbers have names
They were named
They always will have names
Those names will be remembered
Forever
Dedicated to those who have fallen to the pandemic.
Awww… This is such a thoughtful poem, Sue🥺

Indeed those ‘Numbers have names’ and some have totems, prefixes and suffixes too. Some are bread winners, parents, back accounts for their families and the only sources of livelihood for the whole clan. Madam this runs much deeper than I thought. Thanks for this poem. let’s keep our masks on, and social distancing, for the darkest hour is just before dawn!
